The Start-Up-Med competition is an event accompanying the Congress of Health Challenges. The aim of the competition is to select and distinguish start-ups – the most creative authors of innovative and at the same time to identify effective projects covering broadly understood medical technologies, both drug and non-drug (including medical devices, solutions in the field of diagnostics and teleinformation technologies), as well as organizational innovations that improve the functioning of various areas of the health care system.

As part of this year’s edition, the finalists included two companies from the Leonarto portfolio, GENOMTEC with the GENOMTEC ID and BIOTTS with their innovative transdermal system increasing the bioavailability of active substances. The jury of scientific experts, clinicians, Ministry of Health representatives, Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Tariffs, National Center for Research and Development, and leaders of the national medical industry, favoured GENOMTEC ID🏆—> the best solutions.

Patrycja Wizińska-Socha with the title Innovator of the Year 2016 awarded by MIT Technology Review!

We are pleased to share the information that Partrycja Wizińska-Socha – co-founder and CEO of our portfolio company Nestmedic – won the prestigious title of Innovator of the Year 2016 awarded by the MIT Technology Review.

MIT Technology Review, a magazine belonging to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for the second time selected Poland’s most inspiring young talents in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship, and listed them in its Innovators Under 35 Poland ranking. Among the 10 people who were placed on the list, two received a special mention: Patricia Wizińska-Socha (selected Innovator of the Year 2016 for the Pregnabit project – a system for monitoring of the health of the unborn child) and Rafał Flis (Social Innovator 2016, Social Wolves platform).

The Innovator of the Year award was started by MIT Technology Review in 1999. Its winners include Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Sergey Brin (Google), Daniel Ek (Spotify), and in Poland – Olga Malinkiewicz (Saule Technologies).

XTPL among the finalists of the MITEFP acceleration program

After weeks of hard work, the finalists of the first edition of the acceleration program of MIT Enterprise Forum Poland were selected. Among the top five teams is the XTPL team. The best teams will go soon to the US to participate in the next stage of the acceleration program, at MIT.

Almost 10M granted to XTPL in the Fast Track Competition

XTPL received a grant in the amount of nearly PLN 10M within the framework of the Fast Track competition of the National Centre for Research and Development. The money will allow scientists working on the technology of making ultra-thin, electrically conductive lines to move from the operation in a laboratory scale to the first implementations.

– We got a lot of letters of intent from global companies that are ready to deploy our technology. One such company is Trina Solar – the largest manufacturer of photovoltaic modules in the world. It is extremely gratifying, we believed from the very beginning of our work in the potential of our invention. Cooperation with the biggest players, however, requires to bring our technology to a higher market-readiness level. For that a larger team and well-equipped laboratories are needed. With the money from the National Centre for Research and Development we will be able to expand the XTPL team by new specialists and rent laboratory space with the necessary equipment. This is a step that will allow us to achieve our goal of the first implementations with industry partners. We estimate that we will be ready for this in 2.5 years – says Dr. Philip Granek, co-founder of XTPL.

Under the Fast Track program entrepreneurs can apply for funding for projects involving the implementation of industrial research and developmental work on technological solutions and products serving the development of their businesses and strengthening their competitive position.

XTPL is one of 46 projects that have been recommended for funding. In total, in the last stage of the competition the National Centre for Research and Development received 608 applications. Congratulations to our colleagues!

TRINA SOLAR – the world’s largest manufacturer of photovoltaic modules – interested in XTPL technology

Trina Solar – a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, specializing in the production of photovoltaic modules based on crystalline silicon – sent a letter of intent, in which it confirms its serious interest in the technology developed by XTPL.

– The XTPL technology, allowing to print very narrow electrically conductive lines, can have a significant impact on the global technology of producing silicon solar cells, since it enables a significant reduction of power losses associated with metallization of these solar cells. Now it is necessary to further develop the XTPL technology from a laboratory scale to a high level of production readiness. The technology, in case of a successful scaling to industrial conditions, fits very well into the so-called technological roadmap for silicon solar cells at Trina Solar. We look forward to working with the XTPL team – says Dr. Pierre Verlinden, senior vice president and chief scientist at Trina Solar.

XTPL with patent application and a grant from PARP

The technology of making ultra-thin, electrically conductive lines, developed by Polish physicists – Filip Granek and Zbigniew Rozynek – has been protected by closing the patent application. The XTPL company has received a grant from the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP) to conduct the process of global patent protection for its unique technology.
XTPL patent application was filed on March 22, 2016 in the UK. The patent application was prepared in collaboration with a renowned London-based law firm specializing in intellectual property protection in the area of XTPL’s fields of application.

– The London lawyers helped us to prepare not only a very good text of the patent application, but the whole patenting strategy for the future. In March we closed the application. The scope of patent protection in the first place will the UK, but over the next months and years will be extended globally. In the application for a grant for the patenting process we have identified 40 countries. Among them are, among others, China, Israel, Japan, Germany, United States, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates and Australia – explains Dr. Filip Granek, co-founder of XTPL.

XTPL applied for funding for activities related to the protection of industrial property in a program run by PARP, which supports enterprises from the SME sector in the process of obtaining such protection under the national, regional, EU or international level. XTPL’s application was assessed positively and the company received a grant in the amount of nearly PLN 400 000.

– We are pleased that such an institution as the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development believed in our project and trusted our technology. Support of external companies and organizations assures us that we have chosen the proper way of development of our invention – adds Dr. Granek.

XTPL is a technology company founded by eminent Polish scientists. The company develops optically transparent and electrically conductive layers, which can be applied as transparent electrodes in thin-film solar cells and liquid crystal displays (LCD).

Pregnabit recognized at the International Conference Med-e-Tel in Luxembourg

Med-e-Tel is a prestigious event organized by the International Society for Telemedicine & eHealth (ISfTeH) in Switzerland. Its purpose is the international exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of Telemedicine and e-Health. The event was attended by experts from around the world. Netsmedic team presented Pregnabit during session speeches, and in the exhibition section. Our solution aroused great interest and enabled us to establish many contacts that open the possibility of cooperation also on other continents.

We presented Pregnabit during this year’s conference “MedTrends – European Forum of Modern Health Care” held on March 18-19 in Zabrze. Biovlee’s visit to the US

Bioavlee has been developed in Poland, but the ambitions of the initiators of the project do not end in the Polish market. In order to better understand the realities and best practices in the biggest market in the world, the Bioavlee team went in early March to the US for a trade mission. The trip was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The mission led by Secretary of State Ms. Katarzyna Kacperczyk was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Development, Ministry of Health and the National Centre for Research and Development, as well as one of the most innovative Polish companies.

The trip was a great opportunity to more fully understand the conditions and determinants for scientific and commercial success in the highly competitive US market. The global success of many companies began in places where the Bioavlee team spent the most time: Central Lab, Cambridge Innovation Center, MIT, Massachusetts Life Science Center. Our colleagues learned a lot about the difficult path to the development of innovative products at Pfizer and Boston Scientific. The final act of the trade mission was a meeting at the Polish Embassy in Washington.

The technology developed by Bioavlee aroused strong interest among local entrepreneurs and industry experts. Some of the contacts established by the Bioavlee team during their stay in the US are likely to result in closer commercial cooperation.

Nestmedic awarded by Orange Poland

Nestmedic was awarded during the final of the third edition of the Polish Orange Fab. This is another prestigious recognition for our portfolio company, whose aim is to bring every pregnancy to a successful conclusion. XTPL in MIT Enterprise Forum Poland acceleration program

We are pleased to announce that our portfolio company XTPL qualified to the first edition of the prestigious acceleration program organized by MIT Enterpise Forum Poland. In the following weeks, the XTPL team will take part, along with 24 other teams from across Poland, in four two-day workshops conducted according to the methodology developed by researchers at MIT: “Disciplined Entrepreneurship. 24 steps to a successful startup.” Selected teams that go through the first stage of acceleration will be invited to participate in the second stage, which will take place at MIT.

– We have developed a method by which we produce electrically conductive lines in a process, which can be scaled and commercialized. The process covers the areas of nanotechnology, solid state physics, inorganic chemistry, materials science and electronics. Until now we obtained conductive lines in the range of 1 to 5 microns. Further work and optimization process will lead to a reduction in the width of the line size to substantially less than 1 micrometer, whereby this technology will come to a very attractive range of nanometers for many applications – says Filip Granek.

Filip Granek on the list of the innovation leaders of Central and Eastern Europe

We are pleased to announce that Filip Granek (Dr. Eng.), co-founder of TPL, our portfolio company, was listed in “The New Europe 100 Challengers” ranking, published by the Res Publica Foundation.

The ranking is used to identify and integrate the outstanding innovators from the CEE region – entrepreneurs, authors, editors and new media publishers, activists, academics and politicians.
The aim of the initiative is to focus the world’s attention on an innovative dimension of Central and Eastern Europe and the promotion of entrepreneurial culture in our societies. The program was created in collaboration with the Financial Times, Google and the International Visegrad Fund.

The organizers pick candidates based on nominations submitted by the public and project partners in the following categories: business, science, the media and culture, society and politics. After collecting the nominations, 100 most innovative people are selected by vote.

Dr. Granek was awarded in the “New Europe 100 Challengers” program for research on the production of solar cells based on nanomaterials. Dr. Granek has been also honored recently by the National Centre for Research and Development in the prestigious “Leader” program. As one of just fourteen scientists he has also been awarded by the Foundation for Polish Science in the “Homing Plus” program.

Strategic Partnership with the Association of Top 500 Innovators

On November 10, 2015 we entered into a strategic partnership with the Association of Top 500 Innovators. Cooperation between Leonarto and the Association will include among other things identification of promising inventions by the participants of the “Top 500 Innovators” program, located in multiple innovation centers in Poland.

The “Top 500 Innovators” program, launched in 2011, is the largest training program in the history of Poland for those involved in research and research commercialization. Under the framework of the program, Polish scientists and representatives of innovation centers take part in a 9-week training program at the best universities in the world according to the Shanghai ranking (Academic Ranking of World Universities), such as Stanford University, Berkeley, Cambridge University. With classes run by eminent practitioners, including representatives of VC funds, study visits and internships in the most innovative enterprises, the program participants learn how to effectively commercialize research results. The program aims to improve the skills of Polish R&D personnel in cooperation with the industry, research management and commercialization. Implementation of the program is to contribute to the best possible use of national and European funding for research, so as to ensure effective transfer of the results of R&D activities to the economy.

By the end of 2015, 500 people from the best Polish research centers and technology transfer centers will complete the program. The program is funded entirely by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Design Thinking, used at Leonarto on a daily basis, is a method of creating novel solutions in, among other things, products, services, and business models based on a deep understanding of the problems and needs of the users. DT is based on the work of interdisciplinary teams (looking at the problem from multiple perspectives), experimentation and frequent testing of hypotheses (building prototypes and collecting feedback from users). By applying the right techniques and tools, DT is an extremely effective method that combines analytical methods with an intuitive approach, based on empathy and creativity.

Our cooperation will include the involvement of experts and specialists from the accelerapp team of Fraunhofer MOEZ, in the implementation of various activities carried out by Leonarto, as well as exchange of experiences and initiation of joint business ventures and R&D projects.

Fraunhofer MOEZ was established in 2006 in order to promote cooperation in research and business between the Fraunhofer Society (Europe’s largest organization dedicated to applied research in industry, with an annual budget of over 2 billion euro) and new member states of the European Union. MOEZ Fraunhofer headquarters is located in Saxony, a region which is at the heart of the high-technology clusters “Silicon Saxony” and “Bio Saxony”.
